Travel Memoir of 2020

I’ll say it, 2020 was a bust. Especially if you are an avid traveller. I had spent 2019 exploring new countries, tasting new cuisines, and meeting people from all over the world. Then 2020 came along, Covid-19 hit, and everything changed. I had big plans for 2020, I was going to get married in Hawaii, ride camels in the deserts of Morocco and drink wine in the gardens of the Louvre. All of that was cancelled in the early months of 2020. I am sure many of you have similar stories…

These cancellations weren’t only disappointing, they were gut wrenching. Suddenly the things I had been looking forward to most in 2020 had disappeared, with no chance of returning (I am still not sure if we will be travelling much in 2021, but perhaps I am I just being pessimistic). Exploring all that this world has to offer always has and always will be a passion of mine. I have been researching far off places, watching endless travel documentaries and viewing the Planet Earth series for the 10,000th time. All of this has reminded me how unpredictable life is. I feel so thankful for the trips I did take, the people I have met and the fact that I took every opportunity I had…until Covid. I recognize now how true the quote “if not me then who, if not now then when” really is. If anything Covid has actually reignited that fire, reinforced the concept that I have to take opportunities and avoid the age old “I’ll do it later” trap that many people fall into when travel becomes difficult and inconvenient to plan, pay for and execute. This newfound realization that things can change so fast your head will spin, has reassured the idea of taking life by the horns, as often as you can. Like Nike says “just do it”!!! I do have to give a shout out to G Adventures because they are a truly great company, offering their travellers a 110% credit for cancelled trips in 2020, so you get even more $$$ to travel again later! Amazing!

As I sit here, writing a blog post for the first time in almost a year, I am hopeful. I am hopeful that travel will become more sustainable. Hopeful that people will once again appreciate how fortunate we are to traverse this beautiful planet. Hopeful that we will get this virus under control and save lives. Hopeful that 2021 will bring more environmental awareness and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Hopeful that this year will bring better things than the last. So join me, dust off your bucket list, plan that future adventure, be kind to others, protect our planet, and raise a glass to a new year!

See the World, Make it Better.
